Thus, though reproductions of Rubens are certainly among Rembrandt's sources, Schama clearly overstates his case in calling Rembrandt "pseudo-Rubensian." Indeed, the two artists' pictorial idioms are so utterly different that no museum visitor could mistake a Rembrandt for a Rubens.
